My Story

I was first introduced to Positive Discipline by my sister.  I was seven or eight months pregnant at the time and in a bit of a panic.  For years I’d known I wanted a child. Suddenly I was weeks away from that reality and I realized I didn’t know squat about parenting.  In fact, all I knew was what I didn’t want to do - which does not equate to having a plan for raising healthy, self-reliant, resilient kids! Thus the panic.

My sister has three kids, at the time they were aged 9-13 and from my perspective they were great kids.  So I figured my sister might be a good resource.  She was.  She gave me the book, “Positive Discipline”, by Jane Nelsen.  I read it cover to cover and wept through much of it as it answered so many of my questions and touched a grief I had buried for years (remember I was in my third trimester of pregnancy!).

That was the beginning of my path with Positive Discipline.  Two years later, in 2001, I took “Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way” and started giving free talks on Positive Discipline to local co-op preschools.  In 2002, I taught my first seven week parenting class.  Since then, I’ve been honored to facilitate the seven week series over 35 times to well over eight hundred parents and caregivers.  In 2005, I completed my training to become a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer - enabling me to train others to teach this material and in 2011 became a Lead Trainer for the Positive Discipline Association.

My daughter is now a teen.  Positive Discipline has been a keystone in our family life and I am very grateful to have it as a resource and honored to share it with others.
